Hillcrest has grown from 65 beds to beds and is a non-profit hospital which operates through the Human Welfare Coor- dinating Board of the Bap- tist General Convention of Texas.
The hospital is operated by a member Board of Trustees who are elected by the Convention, the medical staff is comprised of more than physicians covering a full spectrum of subspecialties. The total of adults discharged last year was 20, while newborns at Hillcrest totalled 2, Outpatients treated, in- cluding those seen in the Emergency room, were 60, Hillcrest offers the Cen- tral Texas community a broad range of medical facilities.
It is the only health care institution in Waco with labor, delivery, and newborn services. In an effort to better serve the community, Hillcrest is currently enlarging its ob- stetrics and nursery facilities, and recently has initiated rooming-in procedures for mothers of newborns who wish to take advantage of the program. The Emergency Room is staffed by four full-time physicians.
There are six major trauma rooms and several general examination rooms, in- cluding a cardiac room, surgical suite and a major medical room for strokes, diabetic distress and similar emergencies. The bed youth division provides the only pediatric care center in the Waco area. The hospital also has an award- wining certified Medical Technology School, and Hillcrest provides clinical training in Respiratory Therapy. Adjacent to the hospital is the Hillcrest Medical Tower which houses office space for about 50 physicians. The Tower also has a pharmacy and an extension of the Radiology Department which provides all radiology services. A five-story parking building between the hospital and Medical Tower offers free parking for vehicles. It is con- nected to the main hospital by an underground car- peted corridor.
Two major additions have recently been made to Hillcrest facilities. The five-story Julian H. Pace Administration and Education Building was opened this year with some 25 percent of the building dedicated to providing space for health education and community service programs. The building also features a cafeteria which is open to the public 21 hours a day closed 3 a. Hillcrest has recently added a GE model whole body scanner to its Radiology Department. The Cardiovascular Department has the latest in modern equipment for the finest in cardiac diagnosis and care. In- tegral parts of these ser- vices are the Coronary Care Units especially deed for patients with suspected, inpending, or known acute coronary diseases.
These critical care units are equipped with special monitoring systems so that the hospital staff can see the rhythm of the heart at ail times, Closely tied in with the above is the new Cardiac Catheterization Lab which was dedicated to the late Wilson Crosth- wait, M. This lab will af- ford the citizens of Central Texas access to the most modem and sophisticated X-ray equipment and computer technology available for the diagnosis of all forms of heart disease. These ser- vices allow the physician to diagnose internal problems without the use of ex- ploratory surgery.
Over the past six years, Providence nas remodeled and rebuilt a considerable portion of its medical facilities. The public will continue to see additional remodeling and rebuilding.
